π How to change careers from construction to the AFL in Data Analytics
Learn how Daylon swapped the site for the footy field
Hello friends! π
Welcome to this β¨ free edition β¨ of the SportsGrad Newsletter. Each week we take a deep dive into βhow to get a job in sportβ.
Meet Daylon Seakins, Strategy Data Analyst at the North Melbourne FC - This is how he got his job π

What made you want to work in sport?
A passion for various sports and the statistics behind them β how the numbers can be used to aid in decision making to benefit clubs and organisations was what drove me towards this line of work. Previously I had studied Building Design, and during the various pandemic lockdowns I was led towards a career change.
What was the biggest challenge you found trying to get your foot in the door?
Not having a foot in the door was itself the challenge. A combination of good connections, network, my experience, and a sprinkle of fortune helped play its part in overcoming that.
What have been some of your key work experiences?
I have been fortunate enough to have invaluable experience working at Tennis Australia as a Digital Producer during the Australian Open, working in Data Capture at Champion Data for Australian Football and volunteering as an Analyst at Coburg Football Club in the VFL. Each taught me necessary soft and technical skills that have culminated in where I am today.

How has networking played a role in your journey?
Making meaningful and diverse connections to build a strong network was possibly the most important aspect to me landing the role. Having this network helped me identify and learn more about the opportunity, and I was able to refer to more experienced SportsGrad members within the industry for advice and as a sounding board for my decision making.
What does a day in your new role look like?
As most that work in sport would likely say, no one day has been the same so far. I sit within the Strategy team, where in my role I drive and manage projects utilising data analytics and/or analysis to inform and support decision making across the club.
How did being a SportsGrad Member help you break into sport?
I found listening to other's experiences on the SportsGrad podcasts particularly insightful, knowing what they had been through to get to where they are today was very beneficial. The resume and cover letter related material as part of the SportsGrad subscription was also of valuable assistance.

What do you love most about working in sport?
Heading to the club and not feeling like a "job" β the tasks I do during the day are things that I naturally would be interested in and would want to do in my spare time. Working together collectively as a club towards one goal, and doing so in a fun, welcoming environment is fantastic.
What advice would you give to someone else trying to break into sport?
To keep building up connections and a network. It all adds up and brings a greater chance of pieces falling into place for an opportunity to arise.
