How to grow your network with SportsGrad Members anywhere in the world

Copy paste these steps to make new connections easily

“One of the best bits about the Community is feeling like I’m not alone on this journey” - Tom Blaszcych (Member since 2024)

Growing your network with peers is just as important as growing your network with professionals.

But because SportsGrad Members are supercharging their careers, when you grow your network with fellow Members, you gain so much more.

Here we’re all about helping everyone live their dreams in sport.

Which is why so many members are happy to take their knowledge and pay it forward.

So no matter if you’re:

  1. Trying to learn what job suits you

  2. Trying to connect with specific organisation

  3. Trying to find a job opportunity

Connecting with a SportsGrad Member will help you get closer to your goals.

When you connect with Members, there are 3 key benefits:

1. Members can help you understand more about the Sports industry:

Ask things like:

“What work experience in sport have you had, and what was it like?”

“What SportsGrad Podcast episodes have you listened to recently? Any person or role that stood out to you?”

“Based on my goals/experience, are there any types of jobs you think might suit me?”

2. Members can help you grow your network in the Sports industry:

Ask things like:

“What are you doing at the moment to grow your network?”

“Do you have any questions you like to ask people when you meet them?”

“Are there any people in your network you could introduce me to?”

3. Members can help you job hunt in the Sports industry:

Ask things like:

“Have you seen or heard of any jobs in (e.g. Event Management) going recently?”

“Have you heard of anyone who recently got a job in xyz? Do you know what they did to get it?”

“I’m particularly interested in jobs in xyz, would you mind keeping any out for me? I’m happy to send jobs to you too”

For example: Lachlan Crofts got a job at the AFL because he met Nathan Perrone who was working there at the time. Without Nathan, Lachlan wouldn’t have known about it.

How to meet Members anywhere in the world

Using SportsGrad to meet Members is easy. Here’s what you need to do:

1. Open up Discord and head to the #Meetup channels

2. Ask if anyone want to get a coffee

What to say to meet people in your city:

For example:

“Hey Sydney friends! I’ve just joined SportsGrad and would love to meet others living in Sydney. Am particularly interested in Event Management, but happy to connect with people pursuing all parts of the industry. Let me know if you’re keen to have a coffee”

What to say to meet people if you’re travelling:

For example:

“Hey Melbourne Members! I’m going to be in town for a week from Jan 14th for the Australian Open, is anyone keen to connect? I’m Maddy Miller from Brisbane, hoping to get into Commercial Partnerships soon. Would love to connect (and also feel free to reach out if you’re ever in Brisbane)”

If you’re heading to the game:

If you’re heading to a networking event:

If you’re moving to London:

If you’re in Europe:

3. Post a photo to the #in-the-wild channel

Once you’ve caught up, send a selfie to the Community!! This lets others know you’re happy to chat, and helps you grow your network with Members who might want to reach out. It also encourages others to reach out and grow their network and keeps the positive vibes spinning!

That’s it!

Happy networking.

P.s. - If you do this well, you might just end up at a wedding in India

Or couch surfing in Portugal.
