[Toolkit] Build your roadmap to a job in sport

Use this tool to help you find where you fit in the sports industry and the steps you need to take to get there.

The purpose of this tool is to find your pathway into the sports industry.

To do this, you’ll need a solid understanding of where you’re currently at, plus what potential you have that’s waiting to be unlocked. One assumption is that we have under-utilised potential that is often slightly hidden from our view. This may take the form of things we dream about doing, or do as a hobby for the fun of it, but do not acknowledge it’s value towards a ‘serious’ career path.

For example, if you love planning parties for your friends, chances are you’d make an excellent Event Manager.

So be as open-minded as possible as you go through this. If you feel yourself noticing an answer to one of these questions and then discarding it, write it down! You may discard it because you think you could never do it or it’s ‘wrong’ for some unclear reason, etc.

If you want to take this tool to the next level, ask 5 people from different circles of life, and ask them to fill it out as they see you. Try not to get defensive to any observation they make. This is your time to collect as much data about yourself as possible.

Then, have a look over the entire set of observations and see what themes come up. You may find your friends think you’re a much better party planner than you give yourself credit for, and that there may be a very successful career in large-scale events waiting for you!

I suggest reading it first without answering anything. Go for a walk. Then come back and get started. If something doesn’t come, just move on. Come back again a day later to add the missing bits. If you get really stuck on something, at least write what you feel about that question.

Finally, remember that the future takes time to create and will feel overwhelming - And that’s ok.

But pat yourself on the back for taking the first step, most people live very unintentional lives. This tool will help you create a career on your terms and take a much more intentional step towards entering the sports industry.
