Career Journey: How did Adrian get here?

Teaching Abroad: Developing Foundational Skills

Adrian’s career began far from the sports industry as an English as a Second Language (ESL) teacher in Japan. This role allowed him to develop critical skills like effective communication, cultural adaptability, and a disciplined work ethic. Spending over seven years in Japan, he embraced new challenges and gained a deep appreciation for structure and commitment, which later proved valuable in his sports career.

Returning to Australia: Seeking Direction

Upon returning to Australia, Adrian found himself unsure of his career path. While initially applying for traditional roles in advertising and marketing, he realised these fields did not align with his passions. His decision to pivot towards the sports industry stemmed from a desire to pursue a career he truly enjoyed. A chance encounter with the SportsGrad podcast helped him focus on networking and understanding the sports landscape.

Networking and Preparation: Leveraging Resources

Adrian joined SportsGrad, an online community for aspiring sports professionals. Through the platform, he refined his resume, developed a targeted cover letter, and began reaching out to industry professionals. He connected with Michael Long from the Sydney Swans, who offered guidance and encouraged him to persevere. This proactive networking gave Adrian the confidence and direction he needed to break into the industry.

Standing Out: A Unique Interview Experience

Adrian’s breakthrough came during a group-based practical interview for the role of Game Development Officer with AFL NSW/ACT. The interview involved leading a warm-up activity, showcasing creativity, adaptability, and an ability to engage participants. Adrian’s unique approach—focusing on making the activity fun rather than purely instructional—helped him stand out. His previous experience teaching children in Japan gave him an edge in engaging with younger participants.

Current Role: Making an Impact in AFL

Adrian now works as a Game Development Officer for New South Wales AFL. His role involves introducing children to AFL through school programs, halftime Auskick events, and community activities. He uses his passion for sport and teaching to create enjoyable experiences that inspire children to engage with the game. Adrian’s journey highlights how transferable skills, persistence, and networking can lead to success in the sports industry.

Role Overview: What does Game Development Officer actually involve?

Adrian’s role as a Game Development Officer is all about growing participation in AFL by introducing the sport to schools and communities through engaging and educational programs.

Key Responsibilities:

  • School Programs: Adrian conducts fun and interactive AFL sessions at schools, introducing kids to the game and teaching them basic skills like kicking and hand-passing. These programs are designed to spark interest and encourage kids to join local clubs.

  • Community Engagement: He organises and runs halftime Auskick events during professional AFL matches, creating unforgettable experiences for children on the field. Adrian also participates in gala days and local events to promote AFL and its values.

  • Event Support: Adrian manages field operations during AFL competitions, ensuring smooth execution. This involves everything from umpiring AFL 9s matches to assisting with logistics at community and school-based events.

  • Fan Development: By connecting with kids and parents, Adrian helps convert program participants into lifelong AFL fans, nurturing their interest in the sport through game-day experiences and club memberships.
